Ember is a self-contained underground city, constructed over 200 years ago by "the Builders." It is the only known settlement of humankind in a world of total destruction--some human-caused catastrophe has destroyed all other remnants of civilization, and had rendered the surface world inhospitable.[/color][/blockquote]
All food and supplies come from giant storerooms under the city and a handful of greenhouses. All the light in the city comes from the lights placed all around the city. The electricity in the city comes from an ancient hydro-electric generator in the underground Pipeworks. Beyond the borders of Ember are the dark Unknown Regions, which are impossible to explore.
The story begins after the construction of the city. Two of the Builders discuss what will happen when supplies run low and conditions become bad. They leave instructions for the citizens in a special sealed box which will open automatically after 200 years when it should be safe to leave the city.
The box is entrusted to the Mayors of Ember, who each pass it down to the successive Mayor as they take office. While the Mayors do not know the contents of the box they are told to keep it safe over the years and to not tell anyone else about it. Over time the box is lost and forgotten.
The story then shifts to the year 241 in Ember, after the box had quietly opened. Power outages have become common. No one knows how much longer the generator will last. In addition, supplies are dwindling, and the city seems to be falling apart.

City Of Ember is a no-app roleplay forum based on the book by Jeanne DuPrau. It is roughly the same story line, but welcome to other smaller plot lines as well. It's brand new and would simply adore having new members. You don't need to have read the book to understand the plot. Or the movie, for that matter. =]
